Form I (1-3)

YEAR 1

Substitutions
Trial and Triumph: We own a ton of anthologies for children with lives of the saints, so we read saints stories according to the AO schedule in some of those other books. You could also replace T&T and just schedule the book you select accordingly. Some suggestions are:
- 57 Stories of Saints
-Courage Undaunted
-Our Island Saints
-In God's Garden
- Once upon a Time Saints and More Once Upon a Time Saints
-Saints and Heroes
-Butler's Lives of the Saints, Illustrated
-Heroes of God's Church

We LOVE Synge. In the reformation, though, Synge takes the protestant position. We didn't feel comfortable reading it and then explaining in Y3, so we chose instead to use the book The World's Story by Elizabeth O'Neill.  The book replaces the other world histories if you choose to use it, and goes through Year 5. You will need to break it up accordingly. I have a schedule here.

Additions
American History: We wanted to add a structured "Catholic" view of American History to the D'Aulaire biographies so we added the book How Our Nation Began by Lepanto Press. It's perfect and we love it. We added Lief the Lucky to the D'Aulaire Biographies as a freeread.

Later our family began to use Connecting With History. This is Catholic World History.

Science, we added The Tails Book.
Literature, we added My Book House 3.
Catechism, we added Our Holy Faith Book 1
Philosophy, we added Philosophy for Children Elfie

YEAR 2

Substitutions
Trial and Triumph: As with Year 1, substitute.
Pilgrims's Progress: We felt that though the book has merit, we couldn't justify exposing the children to it this young because of it's anti-Catholic stance. Skip it, save it for later, or sub for another devotional Catholic title like St Patrick's Summer, King of the Golden City, etc.
In Term 3, AO recommends Stanley's Joan of Arc. Feel free to use it, but we chose instead to read Saint Joan- The Girl Soldier, by De Wohl, and we loved it. It has 12 chapters, so just read one per week.

Additions

Connecting with History for Catholic world history in our morning time.

Science, we added Science and Living in God's World 2
Literature, we added My Book House 4
Catechism, we added Our Holy Faith Book 2
Philosophy, we added the second half of Philosophy for Children Elfie

YEAR 3

Substitutions

Year 3 gets into the reformation, so caution needs to be exercised. The Synge book is protestant, but can be "explained" if read with a disclaimer. Otherwise, opt for the Hillyer book.
As before, sub Trial and Triumph and Pilgrims' Progress or opt out.

Choose Bard of Avon over Good Queen Bess (No, she wasn't "good." ;) )
Choose Squanto over Pilgrims, because..... puritans. ;) If price is an issue, select and appropriate saint's bio from the time period.

Additions
Connecting with History for Catholic World History in our Morning Time.

Science, we added Science and Living in God's World 3
Literature, we added My Book House 5, and 6
Catechism, we added Our Holy Faith book 3
Philosophy, we added Kio and Gus
Freereading:

Log of the Cowboy by Andy Adams
Flower Fables by Louisa May Alcott
The Princess and the Curdie by George MacDonald
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgeson Burnett
Hilaire Bellow’s Cautionary Verses by Hilaire Belloc
The Lost World by Sir Arthur Doyle

  1. So did you replace all AO History with RC History? I would love to know more about how you did this and how you did RC History with a CM method.
